Ed Harper, Director of Bands - Concord High School

Ed Harper has been the Director of Bands at Concord High since January of 2017. Prior to teaching at Concord, Mr. Harper served as the band director and at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. In May of 2013, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in  Music Education from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he studied Saxophone with Dr. Will Campbell and Music Education under Sr. Fred Spano and Dr. Jennifer Whitaker. He has received various awards for music and leadership including the Louis Armstrong Jazz, Semper Fidelis and TIAA-Creff Jazz Scholarship Awards and is also an alumni brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Service Fraternity and member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.


Mr. Harper is an active member of the musical community surrounding Concord High. He performs as a member of the Rowan Big Band All-Stars and the Piedmont Primetime Community Band in Kannapolis.

In his time as a music educator, Mr. Harper has been fortunate to teach, conduct and work with many fine student and professional musicians and composers. These musicians, composers and conductors include, Robert W. Smith, David Holsinger, and Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross of the Dave Matthews Band. Mr. Harper's ensembles have also received Superior Ratings at NCBA Marching Band MPA,  SCDBA Concert Band MPA and Western Region Jazz Ensemble MPA events. In 2017, Mr. Harper was recognized by the North Carolina Chapter of the American School Band Director's Association (ASBDA) as a promising young music educator (Ed Rooker Encore Award).

Mr. Harper resides in Concord, NC with his wife, Amanda, their son Patrick and their Miniature Schnauzer, Rigby. Mrs. Harper is a proud Spider Band Alumni (Class of '01), Trumpet player and life-long lover of music.

 

 

 

Alex Canup, Director of Bands - Concord Middle School

Alex Canup is an alumni of Concord Middle and High Schools. He participated in many clubs and activities including Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Concord Marching Spider Band. After graduating from Concord High, Mr. Canup attended Western Carolina University to study music education. While at WCU, Mr. Canup was a part the WCU Symphonic Band, WCU Wind Ensemble, the Balsam Mountain Honors Brass Quintet, and Pride of the Mountains Marching Band. Mr. Canup played the tuba in all of these ensembles, well except that one time he played the banjo in the Wind Ensemble (ask him about it.)
